United face tough task

Over to the UK where the Premier League season is coming to a climax resulting in pundits and experts making their predictions as to the likely winners and losers.

At the top, every single report I read had tipped Manchester United as the projected winners. I had been rubbishing these tips although the results this weekend perhaps demonstrate exactly why the Red Devils are favourites.

My rationale was, and still is (albeit, to a lesser extent), that Sir Alex Ferguson's team has a squad that is too bare in resources and involved in too many competitions where they have been pitted against bitter rivals, to be able to sustain a challenge.

I suspect that they will find it difficult to repeat their remarkable comeback this weekend, particularly as they reach a point in the season where they face crucial battles twice per week.

Their defence has been the worst hit, resulting in Ferguson having to rely more heavily on youngsters such as Chris Smalling and the De Silva twins, Rafael and Fabio, although even the former of these has succumbed. Nemanja Vidic returned at the weekend, ahead of the most intriguing of the European quarter-finals.

Tonight's game against Chelsea in the Champions League quarter-final could make or break United's season.

Chelsea's acquisition for £50 million (BD31 million) of Fernando Torres sees Vidic face his 'Kryptonite'.

For the last three years Torres has tormented the giant Serb, resulting in him taking an early bath on several occasions. However, Torres is yet to reproduce any of his Liverpool form while playing for Carlo Ancelotti and it will be interesting to see whether he chooses to involve the Spaniard from the start or unleash him as an impact player later on.

Torres's former manager, Rafael Benitez, indentified Vidic as being the weakest link in the United defence and encouraged Torres to run behind the United back-line and make them turn, with devastating results.

With United due to face Chelsea three times in the next five weeks, how they deal with their rivals will be crucial to their season.

Indeed, United now find themselves in a similar position to the one Arsenal did last month, fighting all the remaining trophies on offer. However, elimination from three of these four trophies appears to have had a debilitating effect on their performances.

Arsenal have been dropping points against supposedly weaker opposition since their season was restricted to the league campaign. However, with key players now returning from injury and the opportunity to relax in between these matches, I expect them to start to apply pressure - and if United should falter in the Cup's, watch them follow suit in the League as well.

Chelsea will now have the chance to concentrate on the Champions League as their chances of winning the Premiership appear to have disappeared along with the two points lost away at Stoke.

At the bottom of the table it's much closer. The aforementioned pundits appear to be tipping any team starting with a 'W' for the drop. However, with seven teams separated by only five points, a nail-biting finish is forecast.

At this stage of the season I look to form and the fixture-list ahead. In my opinion, I would be surprised to see West Ham relegated, despite their difficult fixture-list and the fact that they are currently occupying one of the relegation places.

I would imagine, based on home form in particular, that Birmingham, West Brom and Aston Villa will play their way to safety. This leaves the final Midland team Wolverhampton Wanderers to fight it out with Wigan, Blackburn and Blackpool.

Of these teams, my suspicion is that it will be Wolves that survive. They have, by far, the easiest fixtures although they have played their best against the top teams. So, they could still falter.

Blackpool's defence has been so porous that they need some of their famous rock to stick it together, although the fact that they find it so easy to score may help them survive. Wigan and Blackburn both seem to have suffered a dip in form at the wrong moment. However, with confidence at this crucial stage a vital component, the latter's fine result away at Arsenal may provide a boost.
