Expat football fanatics now have a league of their own ... and with it the chance of holding aloft the inaugural GulfWeekly trophy.
The eight-a-side contest kicks off next Monday evening on the British School's artificial football pitch in Hamala and runs for eight weeks.
Eights teams are competing for glory and each will be featured in GulfWeekly over the coming weeks.
Two matches will be played each Monday at 7pm and 8pm with three points for a win and one for a draw. The eight players on the pitch come from a chosen match-day team of 12, picked from an initial squad of 14.
Paul Millington, chairman of the Expat League of Bahrain, said: "The recently formed Expat League of Bahrain kicked-off in style last Monday with two friendly fixtures prior to the start of the league on January 25.
"The fixtures saw the pre-season and heavily backed favourites, Rugby Club take on St Christopher's School.
"The teachers gave a good account of themselves despite being on the end of a 5-0 beating. Early injuries to key players and a possible lack of match fitness didn't help the teachers' cause and despite only losing 1-0 at half time succumbed to the pressure being applied by the well-organised and physically imposing rugby club players."
Scorers of the night were Derrick Rodney in the 16th minute, Andy Hinsson (29th) and an outstanding individual goal by team captain and talisman player Andy Dick (33rd).
David Waugh effectively ended the game as a contest with two goals in the 39th and 44th minutes although St Chris battled away gamely until the end.
Millington added: "In the night's other fixture, the recently formed Wahoo team played Jurassic Park from the British Club. A keenly fought contest ended up with Wahoo running out 3-1 winners. Overall, this was a great start."
A fantastic individual goal by Eamon Eagan put the water park outfit 2-1 ahead after an early strike from Zak El Boukili had been cancelled out by an effort from Chris Mason from AC Jurassics.
The game was even for long periods before Wahoo's Mark James rolled back the years and put the game beyond doubt with a superbly taken shot to make it 3-1. As for their strengths, Mark James said: "We have a fit team with a strong defence."
